PAVING THE WAY FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION
GIZ PROJECTS IN THE PRIORITY AREA CLIMATE AND ENERGY DELIVER RESULTS AT ALL LEVELS: GLOBALLY, REGIONALLY AND LOCALLY. IN CHILE, FOR EXAMPLE, THE GOVERNMENT IS DRIVING FORWARD THE ENERGY TRANSITION – AND GIZ IS ON HAND TO PROVIDE SUPPORT.
Producing almost two thirds of electricity from renewable sources by 2035 is an ambitious goal by any standards, but Chile is on track to surpass even that. Thanks mainly to the government’s efforts to drive forward the energy transition by increasing the use of solar energy. More than 100 buildings have already benefited from the new solar roof programme for public buildings, including Teletón rehabilitation centre in Santiago, which treats and supports around 27,000 children and young people with disabilities per year. ‘Solar cells on the roof now produce the energy we need for treatment below,’ says a delighted Mauricio Arretx, Head of Operations and Infrastructure at Teletón.
A clear sign of Chile’s solar boom is South America’s first solar tower plant. In the Atacama Desert, it guarantees a round-the-clock supply of low-carbon energy for the energy-guzzling copper mining industry.
CHILE IS COMMITTED TO INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS SUCH AS ‘GREEN’ HYDROGEN
On behalf of the German Federal Environment Ministry, GIZ is supporting the country by providing advice on the national energy strategy, expertise on integrating renewable energy into the grid, innovative energy solutions – such as the use of ‘green’ hydrogen – with input from partners such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and training projects. Wind and solar power now accounts for 17 per cent of total energy production compared to just five per cent in 2014.
CLIMATE AND ENERGY:
DELIVERING RESULTS AT ALL LEVELS
TWO MILLION TONNES OF OIL WERE SAVED AROUND THE GLOBE – IN PART THANKS TO THE USE OF SOLAR COLLECTORS.*
IN ASIA AND LATIN AMERICA ALONE, THAT AMOUNTED TO 1.1 MILLION TONNES OF OIL.
‘OUR SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF SAVE US UP TO EUR 7,000 PER YEAR IN ENERGY COSTS. FOR US AS A REHABILITATION CENTRE FINANCED SOLELY THROUGH DONATIONS, THAT IS A HUGE AMOUNT. EVERY CENT WE SAVE ON ELECTRICITY GOES STRAIGHT BACK INTO THERAPY. AND BEST OF ALL, WHEN WE ARE CLOSED AT THE WEEKEND, WE FEED POWER INTO THE GRID, SO WE’RE GENERATING CASH AS WELL.’
* These results were achieved thanks to the contribution of GIZ and its commissioning parties and partners. Survey period: 2010–2015.
