International Digital Dialogues: learning by communicating

Digital transformation affects everyone around the world. Digital Dialogues bring developing countries, emerging economies, and industrialised nations together, with the shared objective of creating an international framework for digital transformation.

Through bilateral Digital Dialogues, the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), with support from GIZ, provides a platform for direct exchange between representatives from the fields of politics, business, the scientific and academic community and civil society from Germany and its partner countries. Over 700 organisations from different countries have already taken part.

In Brazil, for example, BMDV has been working with the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) since 2021. Various digitalisation topics are discussed at regular dialogue events with representatives from companies and associations. In this context, a BMDV delegation visited Brazil in 2023 to learn more about the digitalisation of the country’s health system and the use of open data to improve public services. In addition, activities in Brazil and in India are being closely coordinated with those in the EU. As part of a joint measure by the EU and BMDV, for instance, representatives from Brazil, Germany and the EU met to discuss the regulation of artificial intelligence.

GIZ supports BMDV in organising such meetings and provides advice on technological, economic and political developments. All participants benefit from the different experiences and the exchange of information on important digital issues for the future.

»It is important that we, as the German Government, work with our partners to create good conditions for digitalisation. International Digital Dialogues offer a platform for equitable exchange on issues such as the use of data and new technologies. The focus is on involving the private sector, the research community and society. This approach enables us to shape digital policy together in the interests of everyone.«

»Whether AI, cloud, cybercrime or quantum computing, digitalisation does not stop at national borders. The issues need to be considered and advanced globally. Digital Dialogues are an important format for enhancing economic cooperation. They strengthen both existing and emerging partnerships.«
